Sustainable Tourism Marketing Network for the Yorkshire Dales & Nidderdale Print

Tourism is key to the local economy. Both the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority and Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (for simplicity, we’ll just call it the "Dales" or "Yorkshire Dales") want to find ways of increasing the business benefits whilst minimising any threats to the environment.

We’ve now held two meetings which were open to any tourism businesses (accommodation, attractions, retailers, food producers etc) who want to work with us to develop sustainable tourism in the Yorkshire Dales. There's no charge to get involved and we don't currently have any kind of formal structure - just a programme of meetings and opportunities to share ideas and opportunities.

I (Susan Briggs) have offered to give my time on a voluntary basis to get this network off the ground and look at ways to promote sustainable tourism in the Yorkshire Dales.

This is what we want to do:

  • develop ways of working together, but not simply based on a directory of businesses or yet another piece of print - we really want to show how special and distinctive this area is
  • increase collaboration between businesses
  • encourage visitors to stay longer, spend more, spread their visits through-out the seasons and have a greater awareness of what makes the area special
  • develop new ways for visitors to enjoy the Yorkshire Dales – and for businesses to increase their income
  • help businesses boost their bottom line by adopting sustainable tourism practices
  • inform Welcome to Yorkshire’s activity so they promote the area in the ways that make most sense to the areaThis is how we hope you can benefit:
The Yorkshire Dales was awarded the Europarc Charter for Sustainable Tourism in Protected Areas and this work is part of our commitment to the Charter.

We’re not asking all tourism businesses to take part – only those with a commitment to sustainable tourism and who are likely to benefit from collaborating with the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority and Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
