We can help facilitate meetings and workshops, bringing disparate groups of people together or create new networks Hello, I'm Susan. I love to help people like you make their business better. I've worked in tourism marketing for well over 30 years, and in the 29 years since I started The Tourism Network marketing consultancy, I've helped over 7500 tourism businesses to attract more visitors and become more profitable. I've worked in incoming tour operating, run countless events and festivals, done B&B and have a holiday cottage so the experience I offer is always practical and cost-effective. You need to find the shortest and most cost-effective route to success. You need to know what's worth doing and what isn't. You need to find a way to undertake low cost marketing that doesn't take up too much time and yet still makes a difference. Most of all, you probably want to feel more confident about your business, to be sure that you're not missing something, wasting time or money. This is where my experience could benefit you. I've worked with so many different types of tourism businesses I can now cut straight to the chase. I'm practical by nature. My consultancy business has been successful, so I can now afford to focus on projects, businesses and people that feel "right". I'm doing the work that I think is most worthwhile and fulfilling. Here's what I've done over the last 30 years: After studying languages (French, German, Russian), and then post-graduate Chartered Institute of Marketing Diploma, I began my tourism industry career with a small incoming tour operator in my native Yorkshire, followed by a couple of years with a specialist study tour operator and incentive company in London. During that time I met many representatives from attractions, hotels and destinations who wanted to sell their products to me. I couldn't resist offering many of them marketing ideas, new contacts and ideas. It didn't take long before I decided to start my own marketing consultancy (1990), helping destinations, accommodation providers and attractions to promote to a wider market and develop new revenue. Before long I had a great client list. They recommended me to others and the business grew. I enjoyed living in London for almost 20 years but was really glad when I could move back up to the Yorkshire Dales. I love discovering new places or finding unexpected hidden gems in familiar spots, creating new events and social gatherings. I'm a trustee of the local Community Office, school governor, part of the group that organises Masham Sheep Fair and involved in various other community groups. One of my current "passion projects" is Dales Discoveries, as well as the Dales Tourism Network and North York Moors Tourism Network, all of which I run on a voluntary basis. Some of the projects I've worked on in the last few years:

We help to market destinations and tourism businesses, from small independent companies to national organisations. We can:
We love product development, finding new markets, writing publicity material, and recommending new routes to market. It’s about getting results, not using big words and writing thick reports. We’ve developed particular expertise in travel trade marketing, cultural and creative tourism, local distinctiveness and engaging communities so they benefit from tourism. We’re good at finding alternatives to discounting prices and helping businesses and destinations increase visitor spend. We have a detailed knowledge of internet marketing and social media. We’ve pioneered new ways to segment and target markets and developed quirky new techniques for raising the profile of destinations. We love to spot future trends and help clients prepare for and benefit from them, before others have even realised what’s happening. Fresh ideasI’ve worked for large and small clients, from VisitBritain, hotel chains and national museums to tiny tea rooms in hidden locations, And every time, I’ve found new ways of working, new solutions to problems. Please get in touch if you'd like to know more about previous projects or for client references. I'm happy to work on an ad hoc or retained basis. I cried. You don't have to.It was a dark, rainy evening and I cried as I walked home from work. I had my dream tourism job, but felt frustrated and helpless.
When you work for a small business, how do you learn what works and what doesn't? How do you get practical advice and support? That was 30 years ago. Through trial & error, I built my tourism marketing knowledge, and began to help others. Since then, I've helped over 7500 tourism business. But I’ve never forgotten how it felt to not know what to do. I understand the sense of isolation, feeling overwhelmed, not knowing which way to turn. I’ve also seen all the positive things that happen when people share ideas, collaborate and support each other. That’s why I created The Tourism Network. |
